There were a couple of things that I really loved about this book. Mostly, Ana Reyes wrote the simplest, easiest to understand explanation of how so many people were murdered in Guatemala during the 1980's. She linked in United Fruit and the United States government. I did not know that United Fruit is now Chiquita. My bad. Thank you very much for telling me on pages 74 - 76. I live in a community with many Guatemalan immigrants, their children, and grandchildren. Most people who live here have no idea what caused so many poor Mayans from the rural mountains of Guatemala to move to the United States in search of work and new homes. It was our government's support of large American businesses and it's cold war policy.
Like Maya, I am prescription Klonopin addict. I have tried several times to stop taking it. My attempts have ended in failure because it is just too hard for me. I also did not know that it hit the same brain receptors as alcohol. Good thing that I don't normally drink alcohol. I don't think that my original psychiatrist knew how addictive it was when he first prescribed it to me. He certainly never mentioned it. This part of the book was uncomfortable for me to read because it reminded me of my own efforts to stop taking my sleeping drug. I didn't expect this in a thriller and I think that the book focused too much on that issue, but honestly, if you are trying to get through it your brain is totally focused on that misery.
Frank's power was not really something that I could understand well. That is what disappointed me a bit. The plot was underwhelming. I would read this author's work in the future. I think that she has more to teach me.

THIS BOOK HAD ME GRIPPING MY HAIR and almost pulling it out. I'll be 100% honest. It kept me hooked, wanting to know more, but as I kept reading and reading I became more confused. Once you get a sense that you know what's going on, a plot twist removes the carpet from under you and you're on your head again. I was amazed by the amount of BS one can come up with to make a "thriller" if you can call it that. It's more Sci-Fy to me. Hypnosis? Pleaseeeee.

I was excited to read this since it was part of Reeseās book club, but this was so awful. Such a dumb ending.

Fine enough psychological thriller. But I was expecting so much more from a Reese's Book Club pick! This one didn't do it for me.
