This is my third time reading this collection. I love the confluence of the stories in the singularity narrative - the worldbuilding is exceptional, pulling from the experiences of many different characters living very different lives across time. There are also some non-singularity stories that stand strong in their own right, of which Grey Rabbit, Crimson Mare, Coal Leopard and Ghost Days are my favourites.

Really enjoyed this book but not quite as much as The Paper Menagerie. The stories felt a lot heavier. I’m also not crazy about the singularity and a lot of stories had that as a plot element.

(I stopped reading at the beginning of 'The Gods Will Not Be Chained' short story)
I am abandoning this book for now, but I might want to come back to it some day. It is expertly written and the short stories are thoughtful and thought provoking. Although, not all of them equally so. Which is not surprising: the bar set by the best of these short stories is very hard to sustain, but it also creates expectations destined for disappointment when the page is turned to the next story that doesn't live up to them.
Consequently, I found the experience of reading this book exhausting and perhaps better served in small doses with enough time to process the stories between readings.
I am also not a fan of the fact that in the stories I disliked the most, I had more trouble with the author's choice of presentation than with the concepts being explored. I found that to be an annoying distraction from the concepts deserving of exploration.

4.25 stars. I was immensely pleased by this collection focusing more on sci fi (less on war and Chinese History) and could see his maturation as a writer when compared to Paper Menagerie (less heavy handed, less telling vs showing, his words flowed more smoothly). I almost didn't read this because I read Paper Menagerie first, but I'm glad I did! I loved the stories focusing on the Singularity, they had a definite lighthearted version of Permutation City feel. I loved and was deeply bothered by The Reborn and Maxwell's Demon. Memories Of My Mother made me cry. If you're more of a sci fi person and felt a bit meh about Paper Menagerie, or if you found the descriptions of torture in Paper Menagerie to be too much, you'll enjoy this one much more.
There were a few stories I didn't care for/were just okay, mostly the pure fantasy ones like Grey Rabbit... and The Chase... , which is the only reason for 4.25.
