LeGuin uses this collection of short stories about a fictional alien slave society, and its process of revolution and liberation, to carefully and compassionately draw the contours of an opressive society, the multitudinous lines on which opression is drawn, how it is physical, mental, social, how it infects your love, your body, your very being, and also the beauty and joy and struggle of trying to free yourself and your society. A tough and challenging books, with sexual assualt, death, torture, but a hopeful and compassionate picture of people and their struggles in the face of the evil of each other.

Finished reading these 5 interlocking Ursula K. Le Guin stories from the mid 90s, focusing on neighbouring planets whose societies are built around slavery, both race- and gender-based. These won't be for everyone because of their violence, particularly sexual violence, but it isn't gratuitous; that is how these systems are maintained. These are deeply hopeful stories about how human courage and love can eventually break down seemingly permanent injustices

what an incredible collection of stories, with both implicit and explicit ties from one to the next… these stories connect the personal to the political, show every side of the story, and subtly remind us that humanity is never far from repeating itself, on this planet or another. the stories have a range of endings, though you can’t help but notice that the happy ones tend to favour those who start with more privilege, and the sadder endings leave us with a lot to think about. overall loved this reflection and expansion on classism, sexism, racism and slavery, and how they all intersect.
Graphic: Rape, Slavery, and Torture
Moderate: Child death, Racism, Sexism, and War
