Probably more of a 4.5.
In this graphic novel, two parents try to do everything they can to protect their son from three elusive shadows who seem to be coming for him.
This is a beautifully drawn story. I loved the way the simple pen strokes depicted movement but also details such as facial expressions and body language. It is both heartwarming (to see how much the family loves each other) and heartbreaking (as the shadows continue to pursue the little boy) and all and all a fantastic story. I also really liked how when they were in crowds, you would hear (read) random comments from the people in the crowd as if you were really standing there with the main characters.

"Three Shadows" is an incredible story. It deals with two parents trying to protect their son from, ironically, three shadows. I wont reveal anything (because it's against my "book code of honor"... hehe) but this book is really emotionally powerful. It writes sensitively about the subject matter and I highly recommend it to anyone who has had to deal with an emotional or physical loss in the family... which means I recommend it to everyone.

This story is by far the most beautiful story I have read this year. Tender and bittersweet, very emotional and truly beautiful. You must read it I don't even want to say too much about it and spoil the experience.

I can´t imagine this book with other illustrations. The art of Pedrosa is simply fantastic, with no color he creates a dark and creepy atmosphere, his draws are very energetic and dynamic. You will love it!

Very creepy. Don't read it at night. Might be especially tough for parents of young children.

Magical

I almost gave only 4 stars just because it ended so quickly ..my real rating is 4.5 though.5 starts for the visuals!!..the storytelling is great and the art is wonderful..almost like a fairytale with not too much words.. great book!

This book reminds of a Miyazaki film, with its diverse cast, varied geographic settings, magical transformations, and quest for survival. It's a family tragedy, about a father trying to save his son from the three shadows, the representatives of death. Pedrosa's an animator, and he really knows how to pace and lay out a scene - lets the art tell the story as much as possible, with simple, clear dialogue.

The story's is a real heartbreaker, but it also lets you know that even in the event of terrible loss, there is still plenty of happiness in life if you choose to embrace the time you have. But it gets that across in a less preachy, heavy-handed manner than my just saying so.

Very good.
