My takeaway from these books is rapidly becoming: don't become an adult. They are obliviously clueless and unnecessarily rude and cumbersome.
Except for maybe Mallory or Jules. They are cool, and I have hope for their eventual adulthood. Also, as an older sibling, I appreciate these awesome role models and their dynamics with the younger crew.
In this book, Jules (Nicholas's older brother) and his girlfriend get pulled into the mix, helping to scheme and save their hometown from awakening giants. Did I mention the setting is Florida? #represent.
There are times when Nicholas grows on me, and other times he bothers me. Maybe because I feel like I would be the Nicholas of the group? But I will continue in denial.
Another thought - why can't adult books have pictures too? I like them and it is unfair. If I ever write a book one day and insist on illustrations, would it be appreciated or mocked?

My daughter and I really like these books.
The relationship between all of the kids is great. The way they banter and argue and fight, its so reminiscent of my relationship with my siblings. I appreciate that this series seems to be a step up from the prior, and my daughter does too.
There's so much suspense in this one that we had a hard time putting it down at bedtime and finished it in two days. We'll be jumping into the next one as soon as possible.
This world is always so much fun.

It's absolutely wild that it's been nearly twenty years since I read the last installment of this series and am just now picking up the second. Blame younger me for not keeping up with book release dates and utterly forgetting about this sequel series. Spiderwick has always been incredibly nostalgic for me and one of the standout series I remember reading in fourth grade. I remember being somewhat ambivalent about the Beyond series, even though it was just getting started.
I will say, I don't know if it's nostalgia or not, but the Beyond series doesn't really hit in the same way as the first one does. There's nothing really standout about Nick or Laurie, only except that Laurie makes so many bad decisions it's a marvel the faeries haven't kidnapped her already. Nick is just a blank vessel and our two leads don't really mesh well together. The faeries as well seem so bland and toothless in comparison. I know that there's still one book left in this series to go, but I'm struggle to see why it was made or what it attempted to accomplish with expanding(?) the world.
The illustrations though are also gorgeous and the creatures wonderfully designed. DiTerlizzi always excels at making them appear both ethereal and otherworldly.
I'll probably wrap this up with the last book, as it may only take me an hour or so to read and just for some completion points.

Honestly the original series wasn’t as stressful. I will still eat these up ravenously but I’m fucking stressed. Yes the future of the planet was also a stake in the last series but I feel like I was more invested in the possible orphan situation the grace children could have ended up in.
