Another E. Nesbit book checked off my list! Not that I have any kind of list with Nesbit books on it, but for some reason I keep coming back to them. This one is also very good. I wouldn't say it's my favorite that I've read, but it's solid. The plot was so-so, but I feel like the characters were better developed than some of E. Nesbit's other books. A lot less magical/unrealistic stuff than the others. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, honestly. Besides the not having magical wishes thing, this one is very comparable to Five Children and It.

Overall, I would say it was a fun book and an enjoyable read.

Funny, charming, and very enjoyable!

As an adult I enjoyed this book. I do wonder how much a child would. A lot of the plot revolves around you understanding how the children are misinterpreting things. If a reader misses this then I don’t think the book would be nearly as entertaining.

It left a nasty taste in my mouth. You're just reading an old fashioned kids book and out of nowhere, in the last chapter, there is an awful racist remark.

Normally Nesbit is a safe read and I'm rather disgusted and disappointed now. That someone who was, by some accounts, rather progressive for her time should include that in her novel... it's just wrong.

again, an audio book listen in the car. this was delightful fun - lots of funnies that only adults will get. sort of in the same line as A Little Princess.

I loved reading this to my children and I have seen that it has inspired their own independent pretend play, which I love! The characters are wholesome and quite humorous, even when they confess their own folly or misguided actions. They’re kids born in a time when children were not helicoptered as much and it’s easy to see that it was a good thing for their development. Their kids born are siblings who truly love one another as well as their father, and have pure intentions. We could use more modern stories like this one!

This book frustrated me. It was written part in first person and part in third by someone pretending to be another character. Very odd. The story was fine enough although I did find the children a little insufferable towards the end.

Funny, charming, and very enjoyable!
