I enjoyed this story. It is well written and the characters are multidimensional. The storyline so far is unique. I look forward to seeing where it goes and I will be following the series.

I really disliked the magic system in this book. I won't be continuing this series for the reasons stated in the spoiler. When I started this I was hoping for a series like The Scholomance by Naomi Novik, this wasn't it. I guess I'll just have to wait until 9/22 for the next book in that series.
I don't like bullies, I don't like to see bullies rewarded, especially rich entitled bullies. I understand that the four "boys" were brought up in a horrible system by horrible parents or guardians but that doesn't excuse their behavior as they approach their 21st birthday. The fear magic only works when you exploit someones fears. This so reminds me of corporate capitalism.
I also don't see why Rory just didn't flunk out. She'd still be wealthy and powerful enough on her own. It appears the council can't do much without her.
The other thing I don't get is why she didn't at least explore why she had no powers in Joy instead of just practicing Fear. If it were elemental powers I could understand, but not sure how the magic side is assigned except by birth.

Good but needed more
I like the book and will decently read the next one but something did bother me about this book... I don’t believe Rory interacts with the guys enough! How does she end up doing what she does in the woods with a guy she only spoke to twice!!

I don't know yet what to think about this book. I can't say I hate it and I want to know what will happen but I also don't know how these people could now convince me that they will be a great couple/harem.
They do the most cruel things to each other and I don't like even one of the guys at this point. I feel sympathy for the heroine but I also just want her to do something. The whole book nothing really happened except tricking each other and doing nasty unforgiving things to each other. I can't imagine how they could come back from that.
Right now I'm debating if I should pick up the second book or if I just move on. I want to see what's happening but if it will continue in the same pace as book one I will be annoyed and disappointed within a chapter.
