Bauman´s last book is not only a reflexion on the current flow on politics to go back to a brighter and happier past, may it be in the mother´s womb or the nostalgia of better days, but a call for a culture of dialogue, equality. IT will bring more questions than answers, but it needs to be done.

Esej Baumana, mimo niewielkiej objętości, jest bardzo obfity w wątki, dlatego zaproponowane przez niego spojrzenie jest jednocześnie przekrojowe i powierzchowne (często brakowało mi konkretnych przykładów, z powodu ich braku najpewniej trudno mi będzie to wszystko zapamiętać).
Podoba mi się sposób, w jaki Bauman pisze o współczesności, oferowane przez niego narzędzia na pewno się przydadzą, fajnie, że stawia przed ludzkością zadania, a nie ogranicza się do kontestacji naszych czasów.
Przeszłość na ten moment ma większy potencjał bycia dobrem wspólnym niż przyszłość - ta myśl na pewno ze mną zostanie.

Puh, das Buch hätte man auch um die Hälfte kürzen können. Die Sätze sind lang und unnötig ausschweifend und verblümt. Der Text enthält viele Zitate, die zwar größtenteils gut in den Text eingepasst sind, aber mmn. zur besseren Lesbarkeit paraphrasiert besser eingesetzt werden könnten. Das Buch stellt einen allgemeinen Überblick der Gesellschaft dar, welcher zwar vollständig, aber dafür viel zu kleinteilig aufgebrochen wird.

Un bon état des lieux de la société actuelle et de notre tendance à constamment se tourner vers un passé fantasmé par crainte d’un futur incertain. Des pistes à creuser pour nos sociétés malades malheureusement très ambitieuses et vitales.

Don't let the page count deceive you, this book is harder to read than it seems. Partly, because the prose is written almost with no filter, coming straight from the head of Bauman as he conceived it; that is to say, with poor editing that fails to produce simple and concise sentences.

The other reason has to do with the very wide scope of topics covered. I would consider this a philosophy book that comments on the current news. It deals with human existence not in the static way that traditional classical philosophy does, but instead picks up seemingly mundane little details, news clippings, talks and books to describe a much bigger picture that encompasses our biggest challenges in many regions of this world. As a reader, you really need to pay attention and complete the picture with your own knowledge about the world. A bit of french and german doesn't hurt either, as translations are not always provided.

If you are ready for it, in the end you will have a very pleasant ride over today's big questions. Afterwards, you may not have any new clue of their answers, but at least will get to know more about the questions.
