If this was a review for the print version rather than the audiobook, it would be a 3.5. Unfortunately, this engaging mystery was nearly ruined by overwrought, overdramatic narration. The narrator’s intensity and overuse of dramatic inflection almost caused me to stop listening several times, but the story itself kept me going. READ this book, don’t listen to it.

Wow this novel imagines a truly dysfunctional family in the dismal London society of 19th century! The Scotland Yard of the time has to make do without our 21st century technology to investigate truly grewsome criminal activity but I sense this is a series with the prospects of uniting Sebastian Bell who is truly a damaged Scotland Yard criminologist with a Crimean experienced nurse who is grieving the loss of her brother who was a casualty of the crime that is the subject of the novel.

I love a good whodunit and this one did not disappoint. I listened to the audiobook and I highly recommend  experiencing the audio version. The narrator was absolutely fantastic and the storyline was engaging. I was very invested and was kept guessing until the end. The ending was satisfying and I've already started the next book in the series.

The Good:
Strong, likeable FMC and troubled, resilient MMC form a friendship and common bond when investigating a noble woman’s death. The plot line was strong and easy to follow as it’s a historical fiction with a lot of mystery encompassed in it. There’s the start of a very slow burn romance possibly on the horizon but it’s not the focal point of the characters relationships. Honestly, it’s kind of a very subplot underneath everything else. Multi-POV.

The Bad:
Some chapters are slow, and there are some spots where a little filler for me to consider them necessary.

There’s Ugly:

Honestly I have nothing bad to say about this book.

It is a series I will be continuing.
