Too many deaths and tragedies. Featured more romance than I thought it would but the ending wasn't completely satisfying. A bit more hopeful in tone.
Also, what was with the weird hatred of the Irish? Apparently, they're dull and too simple to be able to operate machines compared to the skilled English laborers. At first I thought the anti-Irish bias was only one character's opinion but multiple characters implicitly disparage the Irish--even the male lead-- so I can only wonder if it might be the author's bias leaking through.

i know for a fact that if i read this at a tender age of early teenagehood, it would have been over me. my standards would never again be met, and i would simply stop reading all together.
yes, the romance is exquisite (and frankly unhinged in the best of ways), but this is obviously so much more than that. on the prose level this is absolutely gorgeous. the social commentary, the clash of the classes, the feminism? chef's kiss.

Some interesting social commentary but it was kind of painstaking to read and also the deaths got a bit much. I think Mrs Hale's death was treated well in terms of time given to her and time spent by Margaret grieving - it was quite affecting. But the other deaths were so quick, which was fine for the first one, but then it happened again, and again... it was too much. Of course people can die suddenly and without 'reason', deaths can happen and feel senseless, but it was just a lot of death to the point that my perspective of the novel is now 'the one about everyone dying and Margaret being left alone' rather than 'the one about strikes and workers' rights and complex social ties'.
