Lovely, sad, a perfect book for the middle of winter. Infertility and loss are big themes. But I didn’t find it excessively depressing. The land was like a character itself.

This book was our January book club pick and was a pretty easy read, although I would consider it on the slow side of medium pace. I finished in 3 days. It was not an amazing book but I thought it was good. I loved her descriptions and quite enjoyed the writing style. I thought it was the perfect book to read during a spate of snow days and while it was extra cold in our area. I enjoyed the story and the characters were very real and relatable, while also being likable. Parts were hard to read due to my own struggles with infertility and pregnancy loss but manageable. Would recommend, especially during a cold winter; this story is a good one to curl up with in front of a fire with a hot beverage.

Calm and pretty read for December. Glad I picked it up. Never had a chance to linger on any flaws because it was such a quick read

This isn't quite what I expected. It was a lot less fantasy and a lot more historical fiction. That being said it was a beautiful story about grief and learning to cope with what happens in life instead of wishing it was different. If you're into historical fiction and ready to cry (and be annoyed with Jack for the first half of the book), then I would suggest this book.

CW: suicidal ideation, grief, child loss.

Absolutely incredible story! I loved every moment of it. First and only 5 star read this year (I’m super stingy with my 5 stars) and this hit every mark. Only criticism I’ll give is the epilogue should’ve just been a final chapter, and then perhaps write an epilogue about
Faina’s time with her “Papa” and more information about his death
. But that’s a super small issue that I’m easily able to overlook. Otherwise, literally perfect story.

Some slow and fast paced parts of the book. The book gave me chill-paced low profile fantasy vibes. It was enjoyable and an easy read and one that I wanted to really take the time to savour.

a sweet, mystical story all around. the atmosphere was wonderfully written. did not expect a part near the end—and i didn’t exactly enjoy it—but the ending itself, i felt, was nice nonetheless.

"But there was something about the child, too. Without her, he would never have seen the moose. She led him here and alerted him when, like a cloud, he had passed the animal. She moved through the forest with the grace of a wild creature. She knew the snow, and it carried her gently. She knew the spruce trees, how to slip among their limbs, and she knew the animals, the fox and ermkne, the moose and songbirds. She knew this land by heart."

1920s Alaska sees pioneers trying to survive, to farm and hunt, in this new and challenging environment. Inspired by folk tales, without the child they sadly wanted, Jack and Mabel 'build one' from snow and how she changes their lives could not be predicted. An emotional and poignant, slow-burning tale of family, friends, survival and a love letter to Alaska.
