As a passionate winter hater, I didn’t start this book expecting to care much about the harsh landscape of Alaska in the 20th century. But somehow, in only the first few pages, I got sucked into the story of a childless married couple homesteading in Alaska. The way the author describes the Alaskan wilderness started to convince even me to admire and crave the wild beauty of a snowy forest in the mountains. So often during this book, I had to fight the desire to run away to the forest to eat fruit pie by a fire in a cabin. I found the writing to be something special and a perfect fit for retelling the Russian fairy tale.

Guess I’m visiting Alaska soon

A really lovely and magical book. A good reminder that we don't need to know everything or have an explanation of everything. Very often the magic is in the not-knowing. Absolutely perfect book to brighten up a very cold and often grey January.

It was just OK. Two stars is a perfect description. Adequately paced, adequately edited, and with an adequate level of interest. For some, this will no doubt be a 5-star book. I do not think I am the intended audience.
