The stories were just not what I thought they would be. I found the language hard at times and just couldn’t be bothered anymore — it was keeping me in a slump.

That was genuinely okay, but not much more. I was quite interested in almost every story's premise in this book, but nearly all of them concluded with nothing, and I felt every time that I was kinda betrayed with this one, but the following one should surely do better, or the next one, or the next one..
I also don't get the hype with 'The Cat Person' - it could have been a relatable twitter thread with ~2k likes, but being the most read short story in the New Yorker - are you kidding me?

Ms. Roupenian’s ability to tap into humans’ worst impulses and write some of the most damaged, ugly, yet eminently relatable characters out there is uncanny. I couldn’t put this collection down. One of the book jacket blurbs calls these stories transgressive and darkly electric, and I think that’s a perfect description.

An interesting collection of short stories. Although most reviews seem to be coming from "cat person" I actually found it the least interesting of all the stories. Ending with milk wishes, about death and endings, was very poetic and Kristen Roupenian has a knack for streaming together realistic horrors of reality. "The good guy" was the longest and it's one that had me looking and thinking, "how many pages are left in this one" but then it gets better towards the end.
I will give a story collection five stars as long as it has two or three outstanding stories and no bad ones. There are a couple serious misfires but the standouts more than make up for it. Most of these are dark, disturbing, chilling, haunting and I’m still freaked out by the one about the parasite. Her writing is exactly what I want out of short stories and for me this collection showed that Cat Person was no fluke.
