Krakauer is a great author, and I will read anything he writes.

These essays are definitely worth a read but they do feel a bit dated. I don't believe I've read any of them before, so it's nice to have them gathered into a collection.

I wish every essay had an update. I had to Google Aaron Bacon, a teen who died at a wilderness school due to abuse and neglect as detailed in the essay Loving Them to Death, to find out what happened at the trial.

I am anxiously awaiting Krakauer's next book though.

Krakauer is a master. His style is uniquely his own, a blend of skilled journalism and literary technique. I am thankful this collection of his early — vintage — work exists. To read Krakauer of the 1980s and 1990s is to see his rawest work. His passion for his subject matter is poignant, and he never fails to make his reader curious to learn more about the people and phenomena that hold his interest. I will continue to read anything he writes.

A collection of essays on varying themes. Some of them more interesting than others, none of them particularly relevant today. Because the essays are all on different topics, there is no cohesiveness at all.

The author’s way of writing about interesting topics (that are adjacent to but at extreme levels beyond what I would pursue) is eternally captivating.

LOVED this essay collection. Every one was well written and interesting, makes me want to read a full book about each topic. The one about Mark Foo (the surfer) was especially good. I think that Krakauer has a really interesting perspective considering he also has done some interesting extreme sports, so he writes about all of the different sides well.
