Exactly what you want for my modern pulp story. This is the first non-Dirk Pitt Clive Cussler book I've read. That does not make any difference. The names are changed but the adventures are the same. Hidden treasure, ancient artifacts, sunken ships, evil secret societies, and mustache-twirling villains. If that's what you are looking for, continue to read Cussler.

"A book with a cover you hate." This is not really true. I am neutral toward this book's cover. I just chose one at random from my to be read shelf and this was it. :)

Interesting read. The theory of the treasures and the different explorers. I think that there were a lot of areas for development, both in terms of the storyline and the development of characters. Nevertheless, it is an interesting idea and insight into all the different history and the possibility of the connection of the different civilizations before the western world knew about them.

A good read.

Just couldn't get into this one. I found myself getting bored the more I read.

I wanted to enjoy this book. Archaeology, centuries-old conspiracy, para-government marine expeditions. But things just took so long to come together. I stopped reading at around page 160 still being unclear as to who the main character was. Written differently, this could have been a great page-turner.

I liked the archaeology/history side of the novel (the bulk of the novel). The "main story" was rushed and confusing and the end was disappointing because of it.

It's quite charming to see Pitt & Austen run into each other at NUMA headquarters to symbolize the continuity of the Custerverse by a new series... but didn't we have that ploy to create a Hispanic state on U.S. territory in [b:Treasure|85737|Treasure (Dirk Pitt, #9)|Clive Cussler|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1314486012l/85737._SY75_.jpg|3041094] earlier ?

A new series is introduced--the NUMA Special Assignments Team led by Kurt Austin, ex-CIA. Joe Zavala is his sidekick. He lives in a boathouse and collects dueling pistols.

The mystery begins in Morocco when an archaeological team is killed--except for one. This leads to Halcon--in charge of a movement to destroy all traces of pre-Columbian contact with the Mayans. But NUMA prevails. Andrea Doria tie-in. Eventually find a submerged Mayan temple with a Phoenician treasure--and the body of Columbus. Halcon and his henchmen are foiled. Austin gets the girl.

Not as good as the Dirk Pitt books, but maybe in time.
