Not even halfway through the book I began desperately searching for more by this author. The main character, Spencer, was one of my favorites in a long time. She wasn't over powered or the chosen one or anything like that, which is refreshing for this genre. Her personality and flaws were well written. The characters were all well thought out, even the villains weren't one dimensional. Now the spoilers:
1.When we thought Nell died I actually cried. Hadn't even met the character it was just that good
2.I can't pick a favorite character. I really liked Eleni. She was mean but she was doing what she could to protect everyone.
3.When she understood the evil dude?? Top tier. I do think the ending where she asked about empathy implies that she wasn't like him the way she initially feared, which she had figured out by that point
1.
2.
3.
Graphic: Death, Gun violence, and Physical abuse
Moderate: Bullying, Child abuse, Confinement, Death, Gun violence, Panic attacks/disorders, Physical abuse, Suicidal thoughts, Torture, Violence, Forced institutionalization, Blood, Kidnapping, Grief, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Abandonment, and Injury/Injury detail

This book really took me by surprise. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I really ended up loving it. The characters were all very loveable. The main character, while definitely having her faults, is incredibly relatable as someone who’s not extraordinary. I think this might become one of my yearly spooky October reads, I really loved it.
Moderate: Violence
Minor: Torture

Most of the book is a solid 3. Good but not something that would stick with me. The very ending bumped it up for me.
Graphic: Child death, Death, Gun violence, Torture, Violence, Medical content, Death of parent, Murder, and Fire/Fire injury
