The text was brief, but brought Harlem to life. It's nice to have a text that shows the development of an artist like this. The illustrations were a wonderful fit too.

A beautifully illustrated introduction to the life and work of Jacob Lawrence. A lot of his own artwork is used, and when it isn't, the illustrator tries to keep the same feel so there's no jarring stylistic changes.
The text moves with a rhythm I've gotten used to in books covering the Harlem Renaissance, and it's also satisfying.

The ending comes abruptly, though, and the back-of-the-book content that could be used to tremendous effect is next to nonexistent.
