I really liked the premise of the book, the setting, and some of the prose, and didn't mind the jumping timelines etc. My main gripe was the narration. I am fine with unreliable narrators and the memory loss, but the main character truly could never think of the consequences of her actions and the impact on anyone beyond herself, and that didn't change at all throughout the book. I felt like she had no growth, and refused to be honest with herself and others, and I found that disappointing. Also, while recognizing that this is first person, I wish that Franny would talk about other things more, but it was very me me me.

I did not want this book to end. I found the story to be thought-provoking, suspenseful, deeply moving, and just overall a unique and beautiful read. I loved the complicated characters, the shifting timelines, and the tragic love story, intertwined with a painful but wildly relevant environmental/climate change theme. This novel will stay with me for a long time, and I can’t wait to recommend it to others!

A heartbreaking and inspiring novel. Incredibly fleshed out characters that show you just how far love and family can take us. I didn't know where this book was going, but the journey was magnificent and i was there every step of the way. I wish I could read this book for the first time again - shed the same tears it brought out of me. A great first literary fiction for myself and Charlotte, and I can't wait to read more from her.

Honestly, so close to a 5 star read! The ending lost me a little—it seemed a little too "wrapped up with a neat, pretty bow" compared to the rest of the story, but I was happy that Franny ended up where she did so I can't complain too much.

McConaghy is a brilliant writer—her prose are gorgeous, and I really enjoyed the structure of this story. The slow reveal of Franny's past, and the impact it's having on her present, built the tension of the story beautifully. And McConaghy's dedication to illuminating the consequences of climate change while also wrestling with the complexities of everyday life is incredibly impressive. All of these things make her an automatic read for me!
