I don't think that this is a bad book by any means, and to an extent, I did enjoy it. I still feel comfortable giving it 3 stars, so that does mean a level of enjoyment. But I found it to be more interesting in the abstract, overall idea of the book sense. The actual contents of the book just didn't end up being as interesting, and was boring at times (particularly the sections set in the past, and especially the sections in the beginning that were set in the past, were boring).

However, this was a book that I kind of stepped out of my usual comfort zone to read, I don't usually partake in sci-fi/speculative fiction/dystopian fiction books and I could definitely see someone who is a huge fan of these genres enjoying this book more than I did.

In conclusion, it's good, but it just didn't hit the way I was hoping it would for me.

I really liked the premise of the book, the setting, and some of the prose, and didn't mind the jumping timelines etc. My main gripe was the narration. I am fine with unreliable narrators and the memory loss, but the main character truly could never think of the consequences of her actions and the impact on anyone beyond herself, and that didn't change at all throughout the book. I felt like she had no growth, and refused to be honest with herself and others, and I found that disappointing. Also, while recognizing that this is first person, I wish that Franny would talk about other things more, but it was very me me me.

There are few authors that I have found with such a strong and unique voice as Charlotte McConaghy. I was excited to come to Migrations after reading Once There Were Wolves. And this one, like my first read, blends the best parts of multiple genres to create a gripping narrative on extinction and environmental conservation and the complexities of the human condition.

Characters are built that you want to know more about. What wounded Franny Stone so deeply to think herself so broken? What has her chasing what might be a dream? Why is there endearingly frustrating desperation?

Easily 5/5 stars, and highly, highly recommended.

This is an interesting story. It feels like the narrator is unreliable. I found it engaging as a result.
