if i could give this book more than 5 stars i would. this was easily one of the most beautiful and enchanting stories i’ve read in a while and i fell deeply, deeply in love with it! i am itching to reread it right this second and to keep reading it over and over again.

2.5 stars for the lovely world building and magic system, 0 for the romance.

I love the “evil forest spreading its contagion” trope, and the main character’s magic was beautiful. Unfortunately, the romance was disturbing and icky. I understand what the author was trying to do with the kind-of fairy tale retelling, but really the relationship was just majorly predatory. Additionally, the plot lagged a lot in the latter half of the book. A lot of content (including all the sexual content) could have been cut with no effect on the story. In fact, it would be vastly improved.

Sadly, despite the beauty I found in Agniezska’s world, I just can’t recommend the book.

If you love an enchanting, yet sinister fantasy atmosphere, this book is for you. Especially if you want a story based in folklore and aren't adverse to a bit (a lot) of on page violent murder. Really adored the way the main character tirelessly fights tooth and nail not only for herself, but for what's right, even when those in power around her are concerned with something else entirely.

I don't understand why the romance subplot between the MMC and the FMC existed. It seemed more wholesome as a mentor/mentee relationship, considering that neither seemed all that attracted to each other overall.

I love romance books and read this on a recommendation for a fairy tale style fantasy with romance, but I would say the lack of focus on the romance left it underdeveloped and made the age gap feel shallow and about relieving stress through a one night stand rather than them forming a connection that transcended their ages.

I also didn't love the ending, it felt a little cliche and the story was very Grimm tales up until that point, I wish the ending was darker and more twisted.

Overall, the fairy tale aspect of this book was well done and I love the Scholomance series by this author, so definitely try it anyway if you like romantic relationships being downplayed. It's a well written book.
