I really enjoyed this book. The prose, world building, and plot were so well developed.

This doesn't get the full 5 stars because Sarkan gives me the ick and he becomes a love interest. There is a really underdeveloped romance that includes him, but it didn't ruin the experience for me. My icks aside, a huge part of his character is that he has commitment issues and doesn't ever want to put down roots. So the fact that his relationship is underdeveloped is kind of the whole point of this flaw.

I really adored the main character, her perspective on life, and how she handles the "big bad" of this novel. Uprooted really plays with genre expectations. Good and Bad, chivalrous vs. conniving... they're their but they might come from non-traditional sources. I think you have to keep an open mind going into this book, but it is a fantastic read.

romance felt totally unnecessary and rushed/forced. I'm so tired of grumpy old men getting with teen girls. The story really dragged sometimes, even though it had lots of action pushing things forward. I do like a strong female friendship though, and her descriptions of magic, and it was overall a decent read.

I had a whole long thing written out which got deleted. Basically: 
The combo of the decent writing but uneven pacing and storytelling, interesting characters besides the boring narrator, cool magic system and cool creepy nature but super weird out of place romance/intimate scenes, made me come out of this with severe whiplash. Overall enjoyable, just some...confusing choices.

I made it most of the way though, but with six chapters to go, I gave up and skipped three chapters.

2.5 stars for the lovely world building and magic system, 0 for the romance. 

I love the “evil forest spreading its contagion” trope, and the main character’s magic was beautiful. Unfortunately, the romance was disturbing and icky. I understand what the author was trying to do with the kind-of fairy tale retelling, but really the relationship was just majorly predatory. Additionally, the plot lagged a lot in the latter half of the book. A lot of content (including all the sexual content) could have been cut with no effect on the story. In fact, it would be vastly improved.

Sadly, despite the beauty I found in Agniezska’s world, I just can’t recommend the book.
