This book really highlights the generational trauma that came out of war in the Balkans, and why people cling to stories and superstitions to help them make sense of life in complex and uncertain times. At points, it felt like each character was moving in their own inevitable tragedy, which made for a solemn narrative. A compelling, yet depressing read.

very late at night so quick review: absolutely loved this book! i’m not too fond of the subject of war when reading, but I thoroughly enjoyed natalia’s journey to understanding her grandfather’s life. his past was beautifully written and I was very drawn to the magical characters - the deathless man, the tiger, and the tigers wife. also loved how some of it was written from the animals’ perspectives, it really transformed the storytelling (and I was very emotionally attached to the tiger and his wife!)
