A well written and thoughtful book. It's a book that I could read again and would be sure to pick up so many new things. The storytelling style is unique and lends itself so well to the tone and the trauma of the narrator.

This book really highlights the generational trauma that came out of war in the Balkans, and why people cling to stories and superstitions to help them make sense of life in complex and uncertain times. At points, it felt like each character was moving in their own inevitable tragedy, which made for a solemn narrative. A compelling, yet depressing read.

I happened upon this book because I was trying to read novels set in the areas I would be traveling to in September. I did not expect to love this story the way I do. Obreht masterfully interweaves her protagonist’s story with her grandfather’s. There’s something about it that is so fragile and horrible but overall just so human. She makes you mourn for places you will never see — places that can no longer be found on a map.
