This book held my attention and while I wouldn’t describe it as a gripping page-turner, I also kept going until something interrupted me. I do think the audio/narrator made a huge difference, however.
If you like psychological thrillers and stories of lay people (non-police/non-laywer or PI) investigating a case, you’ll probably like this.
I did find I had to suspend belief and forget basic police procedure to go with this story. For example, the wife (our “detective”) finds numerous evidence that she brings to the police, except this evidence is the very type of information any detective would have looked for immediately (eg calls the husband made).
So many aspects of the story were familiar/recycled feeling but not overly so that it was annoying. (Eg cheating husband, husband los his job but was hiding it) there’s also pockets of bad writing-constant bait and switch “but I haven’t done dark things since my teens muahahaha” (paraphrasing)
SUMMARY: Cassie, a vet, is driving home when she she’s a man and woman get in an altercation. Cassie intervenes and the man says “let her die and you’ll live” (or something like that). He also takes her purse/ID/keys.
The next day (?) is halloween and Cassies husband goes missing while out with their young daughter. He’d also sent a cryptic message earlier that day “we need to talk”
Cassie assumes he left her for someone else. (It’s baffling how quick she jumps to this) she subsequently learns her husband had been suspended from his job for ages because there were rumors he was sleeping with a student.
Cassie then gets texts from her husband who admits to an affair and that he’s okay—but Cassie doesn’t believe it’s him. She bugs her neighbor for his video surveillance and sees the altercation guy took her husbands car from their driveway.
Later, The woman who was in the altercation then claims she’s his mistress and they fell in sex while trying to help Hannah, the very student he’s supposedly sleeping with.
Cassie also finds herself turning around in circles. First she meets an elderly woman who says the house cassies husband disappeared at is vacant, has been for ages. When casssie returns to ask more questions, a man answers and has no idea who the lady is... then a few chapters later Cassie realizes the old woman owned the house so who was the guy?
I’m not not recommending it overall but If you read a lot and like thrillers, this is fine fine.

This book had me hooked by the first chapter 👏
Very fast paced, short chapters, and SO many unexpected twists.

This book was absolutely incredible!!!! There were so many twists, and every page was filled with uncertainty. It was soooooooooooooooooooooo good like omg go read it NAOOOOOO
Started out promising but got a bit ridiculous and confusing. Just fair. 2.5-3 max
This is some ‘Young and the Restless’-esque familial drama. I feel like I different book for the most of y’all.
