  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated

  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Sadly didn't like it much. Maybe it was the translation but it felt clunky in the bad way.

Oh, what a difficult read, felt like a poem for the most part, set in paragraphs. The story is essentially brief, the narrative comprised of a few main events (with several "rapes" thrown in for good measure). The ending event was most striking and disturbing of all, and says a lot I think about the role of the woman in this book, that is, as a vessel for the man in ways both literal and figurative.

Jelinek to me really just vomits her extreme cynical and sarcastic thoughts whenever she can.
Since I was struggling with a bit of a heartbreak, her obsessive irony and nasty remarks helped me get through part of it. I love how truly disgusting she can make the interaction between men and women. She also has a talent for writing filthy sex scenes and than adding it with metaphors about capitalism.

I do have to say that sometimes I get lost and seem to not really grasp what the plot is. I have to reread some parts and then I’m back up to speed because sometimes I lose focus in her rants about society.

The most excruciating book I ever read, and I did it because it's Jelinek's personal favorite among all her novels, apparently.
