The book that broke a series that already had some serious issues with representation and sexism. The stupid unknown-daughter-means-instant-fatherly-love plot was contrived as heck, but that could have been saved in some way still. Harry standing on a Mayan temple in conquistador's armour and sacrificing his love to genocide a mainly mixed-race vampire species was not the way to do it, however.
And I think the whole doing-terrible-things-to-save-your-loved-ones is a valid plot - if it's written with a modicum of care. See Order of the Stick for an example that's eerily similar while still differing in matters of gender, race and real-world reactions to your horrible actions.
In short, if you had a nagging feeling from the first books that maybe the series didn't merely depict a slightly sexist guy in a realistic manner, but that maybe the author fully condones everything that made you uncomfortable about Harry, you can see this book as the culmination of all the unease you ever felt about the series. Whether that's true, I leave to the readers. Personally, I couldn't continue reading The Dresden Files after this and was more than happy that I had borrowed in stead of bought it.

Everything I had heard up until this point told me that Changes was the Dresden book, and after having read it, I can't help but agree. After 11 books in a series, there are a few constants that come back over and over, and it feels like Jim Butcher goal with this book was to destroy every single one.
In a review for a previous Dresden book I said I felt like things were building up to something, and this felt like it. There are still five more Dresden books out (with more on the way, as I understand it), and I can see already that none of them will be like the one's that came before; this book makes sure of it.

You know, I read the first four Dresden books, and I kept thinking, "this is okay, but what's all the fuss about?"
Then, I read the next couple, and thought, "okay, I can see how the books are improving, and he's tying things together now, it's a pretty good series."
Then I got to the seventh in the series, and thought, "damn, okay, Butcher's really hitting his stride with these now, I'm getting it. These are good." That lasted all the way through to the eleventh novel.
And then along comes this installment. And holy mother of god, Butcher ups the stakes in a way that could simply have fallen flat on its face, but instead had me blasting through this novel, wanting to find out what happens next more than I ever have with a Dresden novel.
Butcher literally strips Harry Dresden of everything. I mean every. Single. Thing.
And it's a crazy rollercoaster, heart-in-your-throat ride.
This? THIS is where Butcher delivers on his promise of this series.
And the crazy thing is, as of this writing, there's still five more books to go. I have no idea where he's going to take it from here, but I'm absolutely, completely along for the ride.
This is turning into a top three series for me, and I'm mad at myself that I delayed so long in reading it.

After a few books off, the war with the Red Court resumes. I don't know if it was because Turn Coat was so good or if it was because this was the 3rd Dresden book I read in as many weeks but I didn't enjoy this one as much as the last couple. As the title implies a lot, I mean A LOT, changes in Harry's world in this book. Stop here if you don't want spoilers.
Harry has a daughter with half-red vamp Susan. And the kid is like 8 years old.
Harry's office is blown up by the Red Court.
Harry's house is blown up, presumably by the Red Court.
Harry kills Susan after tricky her into killing the traitor Martin and become a full vamp. Because she was a full vamp, when he kills her on the alter that his own daughter was supposed to be killed, the bloodline curse kills all of the Red Court vamps; because the Red King is the source of all vamps.
The plot to kill Harry's daughter wasn't about him, it was about Ebenezer, who's revealed to be Harry's grandfather.
Harry and Murphy decide to get together at the end. But Harry is shot and killed instead. Not be her. Since the series doesn't end and the next book is title Ghost Story, I'm going out on a limb and saying he'll make like Arnold.

So many changes in Harry's life. And so many hard decisions he had to make. Can't wait to see where the next adventure takes him.

Jim Butcher's pimp hand? Way strong. You are not ready, you think you are. You are not.
