Red Prophet struggles much in the way Speaker for the Dead struggles. Card gets off into strange and mostly unwelcome tangents the series he crafts and it's to the detriment of the overall storyline. Much of what made Seventh Son appealing is absent here, and it takes a long time for the story with Alvin to begin. It's not all bad it is just that much felt unnecessary, and I was left disappointed.

I enjoyed this read as a little bit of "fluff". As the 2nd book in this series I expected a completely different plot. I was worried for a minute this book was going to be disrespectful towards Native-Americans; really it was specific characters that might have reflected perspectives during that time period. I am left wonder "How did Mr. Card know so much about Native-American culture?" I am looking forward to the 3rd book, I have a feeling these books will continue to surprise me.

This is not my favorite installment in the Alvin Maker series, but it's still really good. You won't want to skip it if you're reading the series. There's lots of good history in this book, too, about interaction between whites and Native Americans of the Frontier Era.

3.5 stars. Not as good as the first, really a mostly retelling from other characters. Still good though.

I thought this was better than the first in the series. It also is a very good stand-alone book. I love the way the earth is described and the way that the Reds are a part of the earth and the earth is a part of them. There was lots to think about within this book.

Parts of this I really enjoyed, other times I put it down and left it for a while. I have a harder time with alternative history fiction. I also wonder how Native Americans would react to it.
