This type of story is such a guilty pleasure

Lucas and Lois have known eachother since they were kids, and they both fell hard, but boys are dumb. He dated people infront of her!!! and then eventually when they were older, would come home to her. Talk about confusing. and THEN he almost has her and messes up, and she almost dies.

This whole story wouldn't exist if they had both said how they felt.

Oh, but I love the angst.

3.5 stars

Oh, my! This book! All the feel, the love, the connection.

Jay Mclean writes feel like a bubble around you, while you are there you feel the characters are your best friends, and as a reader you love them, you live their tale, you cry with them. Her writing is not superfluous; it's not just filling spaces, and when you finish the book, you wish for more. I am counting days for the next book! This book is perfect!

How do you write that this book deserves all the stars. Every Jay book I read I'm struck stupid again...how can I put into words what her words mean to me? I don't know if there is a way to convey that this woman can write a simple sentence, and that sentence burns it's way into your soul. You feel every word, you become every character and you love, hurt, and want for them like you are there. Another person can write the same words and it doesn't work, but this girl...this girl writes in a way that makes you live it, breathe it, drown in it, in the most beautiful, heartbreaking, and profound way that I find it difficult to put into words what LUCAS means to me. So fuck you Jay. Fuck you very much. (with love people, the fuck you is with love, I also have to add to the fuck count)

Every book I read of Jay becomes a favorite. It just does. Every new character has a way of outshining the last just enough that your love still remains for the last but your heart grew to fit the new. LUCAS has a way of outshining everyone even in his most knucklehead moments, his heart, soul and love for everyone creeps into even the most blackened of hearts. A love found in youth, isn't always the most perfect time to fit, so their journey is the story. The heartbreak of a weakened confidence, but when two souls are born for each other, made to fit, time can also make it all better. The beauty in friendship, first love, and the craziness that comes from a HUGE family shines bright. Lane and the whole Preston crew are back..and they make every page count. You will laugh, cry, scream and want to tear your hair out, but at the end of the day you will love. Bring on the Mayhem it's time to meet LUCAS.

**beta read for author** even though it was perfect..from beginning to end..just sayin

i loved the childhood friends to lovers trope and adored lucas and lois's backstory, but the dialogue was too immature for my liking. lucas was also lowkey getting on my nerves.

From the first chapter, I’m hooked. Lucas Preston is the kind of character who feels like he could walk out of the book and into my life—a star athlete, a big brother holding his family together, and a best friend you’d fall for without even meaning to. Then there’s Laney, who’s got his back no matter what, even when her heart’s on the line.

What I loved
- The friendship between Lucas and Laney—it’s real, messy, and so beautiful.
- The Preston family chaos. Every sibling feels alive, and little Lachlan cracked me up more times than I can count.
- Flashbacks! Watching their friendship grow from kids to something more hits me right in the feels.
- The mix of humor and heartbreak. One minute I’m laughing, the next I’m crying.

Favorite moments
- When Lucas realizes he’s been in love with Laney all along. That “sixteen clicks” moment? Perfection.
- Lachlan yelling “SEXING” in a Shakespeare play. Iconic.
- The way Laney becomes a part of the Preston family, like she belongs there.

Why it’s 5 stars
This story has everything. It’s about love—not just romantic love, but love for family, for friends, and for yourself. Lucas and Laney’s journey is raw and emotional, full of mistakes and growth. And Jay McLean’s writing? She makes you feel.

Final thoughts
I’d read this book again in a heartbeat. It’s funny, it’s real, and it reminds me that love isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. If you’re into friends-to-lovers stories with a ton of heart, pick this one up. You’ll fall for Lucas, Laney, and the whole Preston family. I know I did. ❤️

I’ve been on a bit of a book hiatus due to school/work -related reasons and I am thrilled this was my first read back from break. So. Good. I’m seriously considering a re-read right now, which is highly unusual for me because there are just so many items on my To Read list.

I loved how well-written all of the characters were. I loved the story. I’m super invested in everyone else’s HEAs (also rare for me because I get so invested in main characters that I get upset when they have less prominent roles in sequels).

I haven’t stopped thinking about this book since I finished. I should probably just go back and read it again. 😊

This book broke me

5 "great" stars

I read Lucas without even knowing what it was about. I didn't want to expect for something and be frustrated. And boy, I can't think of one book Jay has written that I didn't fall hard in love.
Lucas is the story of Lucy's brother (if you don't know who Lucy is, just stop right this second and go read More than series - the ENTIRE series - and you won't regret it).
We have a glimpse of him in More than Forever and you can see how special Lucy and Lucas relationship is.
The Preston family is one that I fell in love since the beginning - especially Lachlan - but in this book we got to know all of them a little closer. Leo, Logan, Liam, Lincoln and Lachlan are SO fun! It was amazing getting to see each personality, they're so different and yet so good together.

AND... if you miss the More gang, there's a special treat! You won't regret any moment of it.
