It’s abundantly clear how this book influenced the genre, but the flippant homophobia and sexism of 1930’s LA makes it not the most enjoyable read

I was excited to read my first Raymond Chandler. I always hear his name referred to (especially in US circles) as the progenitor of detective or even action fiction.

Hard-boiled is a good description of this book, even if I don't know quite what it means. Not much in terms of depth, character development, or nuance  - plot is king.

Lots of hard talking, hard drinking, and hard shooting. Good for when you don't want to have to concentrate too hard on what you're reading.

Not my usual type of story or style of writing (Crime noir, gangster type of stuff). But it was filler while waiting for some other audiobooks to be ready at the library. The conclusion paid off nicely so it was worth it.

I didn't dislike this book, I acknowledge its quality, but it didn't do much for me.
