This is one of those books that is really a story about nothing. It's very simple and to the point-an African American ex-GI happens upon a group of German nuns and builds a Chapel for them. That's it.

It's not the plot that makes it amazing, though. It's the trials of Homer. You see him change his mind so many times, and in one instance leave. But what makes the story so satisfying is that he keeps going. He does it because, not only does he feel it's right, but because he grows to care for some of the women. It's touching.

The movie starring Sidney Poitier is phenomenal. Poitier's best film, in my opinion. It's the definition of a faithful adaptation. Also, it's a true masterpiece.

I'm just going to jump right in to this review because......*sigh*.
First of all, this book is only SIX CHAPTERS LONG!?!?! So that's one thing that irked me about this.
Second, Barrett's writing style would barely hit second grade now. It just didn't appeal to me at all, based on the writing style.
Third, the storyline is rather uninteresting and slow. He sure packs a punch in six chapters, but that punch is slow and has no power following from it.
Fourth, the characters are kind of flat and stereotypical. The German nuns are mean, cruel, and not really eager to help Homer. Speaking of Homer: he is an African-American ex-military male who has no place to sleep and no job, but he is very good at manual labor. *sigh*
All in all, this book was not my cup of tea. I hope I didn't offend anyone (either racially or otherwise) in this review. This is simply my opinion.
I would be hesitant to recommend this to anyone, no matter their tastes.

This book exemplifies lots of things which I hate in a book. Ick. School reading is such torture...

I liked this, it just wasn’t amazing or anywhere near 5 stars. It was a good story, just had me bored for the most of the book. I liked the first few chapters though and how strong willed Homer was. I also liked the improvement of the boss’s character. I also liked that the author gave one of the side characters some time in the book too. I wish the names were more memorable though. I think this would be a good read for guys who work construction because it tali’s a lot about those kind of topics which is what bore me but that’s okay. Give it a read and hopefully you’ll like it more than me or learn as much as I did from this book.

Great little book. It's a light read with some good insights into the human soul. A very optimistic story.
