WOW! Wowy wow wow. I slowed my pace on this book to milk it towards the end. The characters and relationships were a joy to get to know. It could have ended after wrapping up a couple loose ends like most books do, but the author really allowed for everything to be as neat and tidy as the attic. I’m carrying this story with me as a friend forever going forward.

I enjoyed this book. The time travel element was an interesting way to explore neurodiversity.  Sometimes, I think people who have different brainwiring (hello!) wish they could practice social situations a couple times before having to live them for real.  Our main character gets to do that in a way that is really interesting.  At times, it is really painful though, seeing how difficult it is for her to figure things out and get to a place of self control. I found myself anxious while reading this book, in a way I'm not typically anxious with a story as low stakes as this.  That said, I think if you are not neurodivergent, it could be an interesting way for you to read a story and get an idea of what it is like living with a brain that is.

There is definitely some Harriet Manners (Geek Girl main character) in Cassandra, which makes me assume that those elements are actually Smalle.  Some of them can be a bit tedious to read, in both books/series.  I have to admit that I didn't find Cassandra very likable over all.  Some of that was things I see in myself that I don't like. Some of it was things I felt like she should have learned to mask/control by this point in her life.  Perhaps that isn't fair, but it is the truth.  Still, I'm glad I read it.

Also, I'm not sure how no one
includig Cassandra, knew that she was autistic until the end of the book. I know lots of girls have gone undiagnosed, but Cassandra takes things pretty well to the extreme to where it seems like it would be obvious to everyone.

Holly Smale attempts to write an analogue for the autistic adult experience with a splash of science fiction in Cassandra in Reverse. The first two thirds of the book are a comedic time-travel adventure, complete with time shenanigans and mishaps. Unfortunately, in the last act of the book, Smale chooses to take a left turn and heavy-handedly smack her readers with a rapid series of traumatic memories, events, and conversations that turn the main character from a sympathetic protagonist into a two dimensional cartoon. The metaphors for autism are thinly-veiled, sloppy, and insulting. Were Cassandra in Reverse just the time travel escapades, it would be so much better. By shoveling social morays in at the last second, this book falls flat.

This was fine. I hated the ending. However, Smale has a good sense of humor and the story is very sweet. If you like Greek mythology, you’ll be tickled pink by all of the references. Which exact shade of pink? Only Cassandra would know.

It’s about a woman in her 30’s, looking for (and ultimately finding) connection, who realizes late in life that she is autistic. It’s very on-the-nose — albeit, with a time-traveling twist. When I read the author’s bio before diving in and learned that the character’s life mirrors her own, I’ll admit that I took a couple of free online diagnostic tests myself. By all results, I think I’m just irritable and treasure silence. 🙈

Reading reviews, I can see both sides of the coin. For me, it falls somewhere in the middle. It was an enjoyable read for the most part, but I did struggle with parts. The beginning wasn't strong and it took me a bit to get in to the time travel. The story line was predictable, but I struggled with the ending. I am not neurodiverse, so I don't understand autism first hand and can't speak to that. I am disabled though and can understand that everyone has different experiences. I do appreciate that it was an Own Voice story. Though I struggled with some of the actions/choices of the main character, I did enjoy being in her world.

A charming story of a neurodivergent woman that learns she has the ability time travel. What ensues is both hilarious & heartbreaking as she discovers who she is.
