I really did like the main character, Cassandra, and felt for her and what living neuro-divergent must be like (the seeing emotions as colors thing is fascinating to me) but that's where it ends. <Spoiler>I felt like the boyfriend storyline ended and then an estranged, completely opposite of the main character, sister is thrown at us and I had to struggle through that completely predictable storyline. There were also A LOT of Greek mythology references and talking points that really brought me out of the story. I did like the author's writing style though.

There was just something about the blurb of Cassandra In Reverse that caught my attention immediately. I love a story with a time travel element, and I also have a weak spot for quirky and unique characters... Cassandra Dankworth sounded like a character with so much potential, and I simply HAD to meet her and get to know her story. I'm so glad I did, because I ended up having an absolute blast with this book.

There is a lot to love in this book, but there is no doubt whatsoever that main character Cassandra Dankworth is the true star of the show. I warmed up to her immediately, and I had an absolutely brilliant time seeing the world through her eyes. I thought that the autism portrayal was expertly done, and I loved the message behind this story that people with autism might think and function differently than what you are used to, but differently doesn't mean less in any way. Cassandra's character growth and road to self-acceptance is well developed and realistically portrayed... If you can take the whole sci-fi aspect with the time travel with a grain of salt of course. There is one thing for sure: Cassandra is a character that will stay with me for a long time, and she is one I wish I could meet up with in real life.

What I also loved was the focus on Greek (and Roman) mythology, and how the gods/characters were incorporated into the plot. The references to the different myths fitted the story very well, and it also helped give more insight in Cassandra's character at the same time. Another major element in Cassandra In Reverse is the time travel of course. While you usually see time travel in science fiction books, I think that this story reads mostly like a contemporary where time travel is only casually included in the plot. Sci-fi fans might be disappointed by the lack of focus on how the time travel actually works, but I personally didn't mind as I found the balance to be just right.

There is some romance and even a love triangle included in Cassandra In Reverse, but I don't think the main focus of this story is on the romance itself. Instead, it reads more like contemporary fiction about a character trying to find her true self and accept the way she is. The story puts a spotlight on autism, family issues, work relations and the fact that time is fickle and a small change might have consequences you could have never foreseen.

All in all, I don't think it comes as a surprise when I say that I had a fantastic time with this story. If you enjoy a well written contemporary with an unique main character, excellent autism representation and a touch of time travel and romance, you HAVE to add Cassandra In Reverse to your wishlist. Trust me, you will regret not meeting up with her! 

Zoals de synopsis al laat doorschemeren kan Cassandra tijdreizen. Maar is dat eigenlijk wel zo'n goed idee? Waaróm wil ze tijdreizen. Wat wil ze nou echt veranderen? Het antwoord op die vraag verandert langzamerhand. Eerst doet ze het voor de liefde, maar later doet ze het voor zichzelf. Het is een hele zoektocht, naar wie ze is en wat ze wil met haar leven. Of soms gewoon een kans om je baas de waarheid te zeggen zonder ontslagen te worden. Je schreeuwt even lekker en floep, je bent weer terug in de tijd gegaan. Niemand die het weet. Maar door al dat gereis raakt ze haar eigen grip op de tijd kwijt. En dan kom ik aan bij het stukje autisme...

Het verplaatsen op de tijdlijn werd als een soort metafoor gebruikt voor hoe sommige mensen, waaronder Cassie, altijd alles onthouden. Ze weten dingen van toen ze heel klein waren nog net zo gedetailleerd als iets wat gisteren is gebeurd. Dit kan heel verwarrend zijn. Zowel de emoties als gebeurtenissen zweven allemaal door elkaar en je weet niet meer goed wat wanneer gebeurde.
Dat gebeurde ook door het tijdreizen. Ze spoelde zo vaak terug dat ze vergat of en wanneer ze haar vriend Will een berichtje had gestuurd om een date te bevestigen bijvoorbeeld. Ze vergat of haar collega nou al had gevraagd om samen te werken of niet. Alles liep door elkaar en dat had zo zijn gevolgen...

Cassandra weet niet dat ze autistisch is. Maar het wordt door personages in het boek wel een aantal keer benoemd. Of ze vragen haar of ze 'op het spectrum' zit. Maar Cass snapt die vraag nooit. Denken ze dat ze heel kleurrijk is?
Als lezer snap je dus wel dat Cassandra autistisch is maar ze heeft zelf geen flauw idee. En dat was wel een bijzondere leeservaring.
Ik heb geen autisme, ik heb ADHD, maar toch herkende ik veel in Cassie. Er is dan ook veel overlap tussen de twee, maar ook duidelijke verschillen. Van wat ik weet van autistische vrienden, mijn eigen ervaring en familie, vond ik de representatie extreem goed gedaan. Alleen iemand die zelf neurodivergent is kan zo schrijven. Het is altijd zo zo zo fijn om een own-voices boek te lezen.

Een aantal dingen die ik fantastisch vond

Cassandra krijgt door het boek wat validistische opmerkingen naar haar hoofd geslingerd, gewoon omdat haar brein anders werkt en ze zich anders uitdrukt. Mensen denken dat het oké is om bepaalde dingen te zeggen. Maar dat is het absoluut niet. (Wordt later in het verhaal ook duidelijk) Maar haar huisgenoot spande de kroon wat betreft onfatsoenlijk gedrag, zoals onderstaande quote wel duidelijk maakt...

Het tijdreizen is behoorlijk messy, maar toch of misschien juist daardoor, leert ze een aantal dingen. En bovenal leert ze dat het oké is om zichzelf te zijn en dat het oké is om moeite met dingen te hebben, om je leven niet tiptop in orde te hebben op je eenendertigste.  Ze sluit vriendschap, neemt een besluit over haar familie. En het was mooi om haar te zien groeien, te zien hoe ze dingen leerde. Dit was absoluut een verhaal over zelfreflectie en zelfontdekking. Over zelfliefde en respect.

Ten slotte wil ik het nog even hebben over de Griekse mythologie. Cassandra's special interest. Er worden vaak stukjes uit de Griekse mythologie verteld. En ik kende er niks van. Maar dat was geen enkel probleem. Cassie gebruikt die verhalen om haar eigen leven te begrijpen. Het zorgde voor net weer een extra laag, en daar hou ik van. Maar als je net als ik bijna niks weet van die mythologie? Geen zorgen. Cassandra zal alles aan je uitleggen! 

De toon in dit boek was een mengeling van verdriet, onbegrip en hilariteit. Ik heb zo moeten lachen om hoe Cassie dingen ziet. En nee ik lach haar niet uit, maar ik genoot van de manier waarop zij de wereld ziet.
De mensen die zeggen dat autisten ongevoelige robots zijn, hebben duidelijk nog nooit met een autist gepraat, écht gepraat, niet die bullshit koetjes-en-kalfjes zooi. Tegen die mensen zeg ik; lees dit boek. En geniet van de emoties en unieke blik op de wereld. Sta versteld van de intensiteit en heb wat respect. Autisten zijn niet raar. Ze zijn prachtig. Anders? Ja, absoluut. Maar niet raar.
En voor de neurodivergente mensen: lees dit boek en voel je wat minder alleen. Er zijn meer mensen zoals jij en ze zijn prachtig! Je bent goed zoals je bent en je verdient je plekje in deze wereld. Laat niemand je dat uit het hoofd praten. 

This book felt like someone aged me up ten years, gave me the power of time travel, and then wrote down every thought I had. This made it feel both incredibly relatable, raw, and realistic, but also at times like I was reading through a list of thoughts I could have had by myself and therefore not always the most enjoyable experience. I think this is partially because whilst it did have time travel elements, they were largely unexplained and just an addition to the main character’s life, leaving it still feeling like a contemporary which is very much not my thing (although obviously a me problem). The writing style was very casual, which made you feel connected to the main character and made it an easy read, but it wasn’t my favourite style, and also I think skewed the pacing sometimes. I would have liked to see a bit more of Cassie dealing with her diagnosis, as she spends the majority of this book unaware of her autism and only realised it near the end. I think coming to terms with it, especially after not having even considered it before, is a really important experience that was left out here. Still, I think this book has amazing autism representation, and you can really tell the author put her heart and soul into it. Cassie was an incredibly relatable and meaningful character to me, and watching her story arc and coming to terms with herself was very powerful. The story arc itself was great too, I loved how the relationships changed and developed

especially the sister relationship. I also love that things didn’t work out with Will - sometimes, as much as you try, you just aren’t compatible with someone, and that’s ok.

. I think I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes contemporary a bit more than me.

I loved this book. Cassandra is a fantastic MC. I loved the plot and the time travel element was well done and also not *over* done.

I adored the female friendships and thought the secondary characters brought so much to the book.
