WOW! Wowy wow wow. I slowed my pace on this book to milk it towards the end. The characters and relationships were a joy to get to know. It could have ended after wrapping up a couple loose ends like most books do, but the author really allowed for everything to be as neat and tidy as the attic. I’m carrying this story with me as a friend forever going forward.

Holly Smale attempts to write an analogue for the autistic adult experience with a splash of science fiction in Cassandra in Reverse. The first two thirds of the book are a comedic time-travel adventure, complete with time shenanigans and mishaps. Unfortunately, in the last act of the book, Smale chooses to take a left turn and heavy-handedly smack her readers with a rapid series of traumatic memories, events, and conversations that turn the main character from a sympathetic protagonist into a two dimensional cartoon. The metaphors for autism are thinly-veiled, sloppy, and insulting. Were Cassandra in Reverse just the time travel escapades, it would be so much better. By shoveling social morays in at the last second, this book falls flat.

Really enjoyed this book but
was a little frustrated with the ending. I guess it means she will go back and do it all over again and hopefully spare her sister and Will any pain they may have felt. I was saddest to see her let her new friends go unless she planned to reenact those parts too, but that seems unlikely.
overall, an enchanting read though!

Reading reviews, I can see both sides of the coin. For me, it falls somewhere in the middle. It was an enjoyable read for the most part, but I did struggle with parts. The beginning wasn't strong and it took me a bit to get in to the time travel. The story line was predictable, but I struggled with the ending. I am not neurodiverse, so I don't understand autism first hand and can't speak to that. I am disabled though and can understand that everyone has different experiences. I do appreciate that it was an Own Voice story. Though I struggled with some of the actions/choices of the main character, I did enjoy being in her world.

I felt like this book was made for me. As an autistic and Greek person. This was such a fun read of a woman traveling through time and getting a better understanding of herself and those around her.

Even readers who read only the first three chapters and the last two chapters will be unsurprised by the “reveal” at the end.
I spent most of the book PISSED at every medical practitioner, parent, therapist, teacher, or family member who spent any time with Cassandra and didn’t draw the glaringly obvious conclusion.

The book felt overlong to me, though the protagonist clearly needed LOTS of time to process her abilities and her situation. The audio narration was very well done.
