This book has aged me. It's such a darker step into the story so far and, while it builds a lot like the previous book, it does it in such a better way..... Even if that way made me sad.

As always, a great addition to the red rising saga. Brutal, crushing, but I can’t wait to start the next one.

I am a huge fan of all of the red rising books. This one took me much longer to read than all the others in the series. There are many story lines happening at once and I found myself having to re-read a bit to put all the pieces together but WOW this hit me with so many emotions. I’m scared to start Light Bringer because I am afraid of what is to come and also so sad for this series to end.

I struggled to get through this book. It is very long and ping pongs between multiple POVs and storylines. This made it difficult to keep up and to connect to the emotional plot points. My least favorite of the series.

As Pierce Brown said he hoped in the Acknowledgments at the end of this book, "I loved and loathed this story". It was so brutal and the scenes Brown paints with his words are so visceral. The way you can go from smiling for the characters' successes to feeling dread as everything is pulled out from under them is exhilarating.

This series has taken me on rollercoaster after rollercoaster of emotions. I have been disgusted my all of the protagonists' choices, just to root for them chapters later. They are all so complex and brutal in their actions; so passionate and determined to enact their plans.

I love how immersed I can become in Brown's literary world. The whole time I just wanted to leave work so I could get back to the story. I even got annoyed that my college graduation was taking so long because I wanted to leave so I could keep reading lol.

I hadn't been particularly enjoying it for a while - I was finding things that should have been exciting really tedious, and was growing a little weary of the endless violence and main characters' plans being foiled - and then something happened that was so gratuitously nasty and unpleasant that I realised I didn't want to know any more about any of these characters. I've never DNF-ed a book because of a single event, I'm not particularly easily shocked, but it was a combination of the deeply awful nature of that event and the fact that it crystallised for me the fact that I just didn't care enough anymore about the story to put myself through any more of that nastiness.
