This book was farfetched and filled with too much scientific and technical jargon. Cornwell's earlier books are much, much better.

500 page book....450 of which were filled with insane detail suggesting a huge government conspiracy. Then 50 pages of a forced/rushed ending that sort of came out of nowhere? I might have to stop reading the Scarpetta books....they aren't as good as they used to be.

This was a different approach than she usually takes. It is very internally focused. I was left feeling like there is more mystery to solve, but that might come in the next book.

Man. I don't remember disliking Kay Scarpetta before, but I really disliked her here. So much handwringing and endless perseveration. God. Couldn't get to the end fast enough. Won't be reading more of this author.

NOT WORTH THE EFFORT... Oh where oh where did the REAL Patricia Cornwell go? Those older books where you couldn't put them down... geeze... I HATED picking this one up! The characters are horrid. They're doing unrealistic things... there isn't ONE that I LIKED... they've all been abducted and had their personalities changed to unlikable. UGH.

Patricia Cornwall has given herself a formidable task: how to get her readers to like Pete Marino again, and how to make Kay Scarpetta someone we want to read about when she can't keep herself together anymore. I don't mind my heroines being real people, but I love her earlier books much better (and the old Scarpetta). Frankly, I wouldn't want her working for me with all of her current issues and insecurities, and I don't like it that they take over the plot.

This was finally another Kay Scarpetta novel that relived the original ooph for the character. The fast pace was reflected in the frantic writing. I only wonder if, three quarters of the way through, we the readers should have felt that the story lurched. Were we supposed to feel the sleeplessness of Kay or was the editing somehow faulty so that there was a break in the continuity of the story? It concluded well, but that stutter kept me from giving it another star in my review.
