This is not an academic response, but I just don’t buy it. Kiste failed to sell me on the surrealism of the setting to make any of the rust maiden stuff believable. I’ve read lots of horror and surreal content and there’s just something missing here. I don’t buy that this happened in the 1980’s in Cleveland, Ohio. I don’t buy that an FBI agent would sleep with an 18 year old JUST graduated high school and then face no consequences, then become obsessed with the town and make a museum? Like Adrian just does not make sense to me. And the parents collectively not caring AT ALL? It just doesn’t work. Also, I did not like the slight lean to anti-union sentiments. Not cute.

Really cool concept and written in a very engaging and haunting style. I thought it did a really good job of tying together the horror aspects and the social issues aspects. With some books that fall more under literary horror I feel like the horror elements get buried pretty deep under the literary fiction part but this one I thought had a nice mix of like social commentary and body horror the entire way through. Giving it a technical 3.5 because I would have liked a few more answers at the end but it was still a really good read and the narrator for the audiobook was really enjoyable as well.

So I get the hypotheticals of what this book means, but I just wanted more. I wanted more answers and I didn't really get anything. The first half of the book was so boring, I was so uninterested.

Tenso, intrigante y atractivo, mezcla muchos sentimientos.

How do you make a story about women who mutate into literal metal non-human entities, that give off the vibes of a steam-punk Tim Burton or Guillermo del Toro creature and make it SO boring?

Seriously.
