This book felt ultimately delightful, which is strange, considering it starts with a poor child helping to bury her brothers. And then later involved three different families with their own complex traumas.
But the three girls who carry the story are daring, thoughtful, opinionated survivors. Their friendships and other relationships ebb and flow as they find out more about life and social systems and each other. There’s touches of worker’s rights, feminism, depression, dealing with bigotry… but it never gets too deep, because maybe that’s just the YA novel way.
Still, I loved the characters and their journeys, and will definitely try this author again.

I found this book to be alright. The pacing for me was slow, but I did enjoy the characters. The plot itself was sometimes hard to follow, which made me sad since I’ve been wanting to read this for so long.
