Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it didn’t fully capture me the way I expected. I think it was mostly because of the use of old English language and I found the story to be super slow than the usual fast paced books I read.

Tolkien’s world-building is impressive—Middle-earth feels alive and full of history. The characters, especially Bilbo Baggins, are memorable. I loved watching Bilbo grow from a timid, home-loving hobbit into someone brave and clever. His character arc is one of the strongest parts of the story, and I  enjoyed seeing how he adapted to the challenges thrown at him.

The adventure itself is full of fun and exciting moments. There’s a nice balance of lightheartedness and tension, especially when Bilbo faces off against Smaug. The pacing was mostly solid, though there were times, particularly in Mirkwood, where I found the story dragging a bit. The plot also felt somewhat episodic at times, like a series of separate adventures rather than one continuous journey, which made it harder to stay fully invested.

That said, some parts of the book felt a bit inconsistent. The tone shifts a lot—one minute it’s whimsical and light, and the next, it’s more serious or even dark. I think the mix can work at times, but other times it was a little jarring. Most of the scary scenes were over the top and like the roll of your eyes I knew that was going to happen. The ending was not at all what I was hopping for and was actually kind of absurd and shallow (not well thought of)
In the end, I liked The Hobbit, but it didn’t blow me away. It’s definitely a great introduction to Tolkien’s world, and I’m sure it sets up the deeper themes and complexities found in The Lord of the Rings

Anyways, I don’t really know why I bought this book or the Lord of the Rings series because I’m not really into classics and it’s not my age read. Off to read Lord of the Rings… :/

Revisiting this series after a while! Tolkien’s world building is incredible, with a mix of loveable characters and an adventure of turns and twists. Was gifted this book series by my uncle as a kid, and only recently found out the copies were my mum’s from the 80’s! Makes me cherish them even more now :0)
