I enjoyed the story within the story format of this novel and how the author used it to explore slavery in Canada and the U.S., Black refugee communities in Canada, and relations with the various Indegenous nations around the Great Lakes area. I don't want to give away much of the plot because much of my enjoyment was in how the stories unfolded and wove together. I also appreciated learning about a part of history that was new to me.

There isn’t really a plot, it’s more a collection of stories. The stories were interesting and it makes me want to look more into the history of black communities in Canada. The writing was a little too gratuitous for me.

So far the book is very long winded. There is a lot of detail but I find myself asking why and wanting the story to get back on track.
