I just finished my reread of Fourth Wing, after having read Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. I am changing my initial rating of 3 stars to 5 stars.

When I read Fourth Wing last year, I was still very new to romantasy (I’m historically and epic & high fantasy girlie). I didn’t understand the intent of romantasy. At the time, I had only ever read the first three ACOTAR books, and they were just meh for me (I actually fully dislike them after their reread).

My second mistake was listening to the audiobook on my first read (this is a me thing and no fault of the audiobook). I know that I appreciate fantasy more when I read it physically, so I really didn’t give Fourth Wing a fair shot.

A year later, I’ve read much more romantasy and I now understand what I appreciate in this genre. And Fourth Wing checks all of those boxes.

First, Rebeccas Yarros handles exposition masterfully. No information dumps. No clunky dialogue. She keeps a great reading rhythm  while giving me everything I need at the time about the world. She doesn’t give us too much, too soon, which is one of my biggest reading pet peeves. Make me care about the characters & plot before you tell me about the world, thank you very much.

Second, the foreshadowing is great! Reading the book physically allowed me to catch lines that were seemingly throw away, but were actually giving us a hint as to how the book would end. Did I have more insight because I had already read books two and three? Sure. But there was definite payoff in this book alone.

Third, I really appreciate that we got a diverse cast. And in doing so, Yarros was able to circumvent a few traditional fantasy conventions in a fresh way that didn’t feel perfunctory or performative.

Anyways, let’s see how I feel about Iron Flame after a reread, shall we?
