It’s pretty polarizing online among book influencers but I don’t think Fourth Wing is bad for a first installment. This was actually my second time going through it (in anticipation for book three) and I will say that after a re-read the character flaws are VERY loud. Overall, the biggest issue is the (almost) love triangle.
Dain is almost from the beginning, annoyingly condescending of Violet to the point that when he eventually betrays her, it doesn’t feel like the gut-punch it’s supposed to. You’re just left with this feeling of ‘well of course he would, he’s an asshole.’ And I think a large part of that is lack of development of their relationship prior to the story. We are told that they are childhood friends but we don’t really SEE their connection. He just babies her and makes references to their past that we never get to actually experience. A flashback or something would have been nice.

As for Violet and Xaden, for a first book their chemistry works but outside of physical attraction we aren’t working with much else. I would have loved them to have more opportunities, outside of the scene on the parapet toward the end, to really emotionally connect. But I’ve definitely been disappointed by worse, less developed insta-love before.

I had a good time regardless and at the end of the day that’s the important part.

The
change in voice actors in the 11th hour was jarring and completely took me out of the story.
Too much focus on the main character’s
“weakness”
and also neither of the men in this is stellar or even decent. Learning how to communicate and some therapy would do a lot of good for these characters. The plot was disappointing and predictable but I read it nonetheless and would recommend it to other trashy romantacy fans. Like someone I follow said, not enough dragons.

I really enjoyed the premise and I don't mind the obvious inspiration from The Dragon Riders of Pern and Harry Potter. I picked it up for what it was - a entertaining fantasy read. I liked the female protagonist who wasn't always incredibly strong and has a permanent disability. I liked the instances of meaningful loss and death.  But halfway through the book things started to disintegrate - the character development, the writing, pacing. The smut scenes were notably poorly written (maybe it fits the mentality and intensity of characters in their early 20s?). At 80% in I was supremely annoyed and almost DNF, but the last handful of chapters Yarros managed to revive the plot and I was satisfied enough to remain interested in what happens next.

3.5 stars | I would have enjoyed this so much more if it had been edited more! I can sum up my many feelings this way: I kept being pulled out of a fantasy story I liked by the overdramatic, repetitive narration of the main character. She reads younger to me than she’s supposed to be, and I think the author was trying to give her WAY too many things that make her the Super Cool Not Like Other Girls FMC™️.

Take a page out of Violet’s book here and Don’t Give Up. This one started with a slog of expositional cliches, and I strongly considered putting it down, but if you can make it to Threshing, it really ramps up from there with great payoff at the end.

and Fuck Dain!
