Reviews with content warning for Suicidal thoughts - Fourth Wing

Like many people, I read this because I had huge FOMO after seeing everyone loving it. I usually don’t give in to trending books easily, especially when it’s a genre I don’t read that often like fantasy. However, this made me feel so left out that I just HAD to read it and I’m so glad that I did because I think I just found my favorite book of 2023.

This had literally EVERYTHING I love in a book. Intriguing plot, multi-layered characters, plot twists, found family, hilarious characters, enemies to lovers, and so much more. Even the political intrigue was entertaining. And I never find politics entertaining so that says a lot.

Violet has become one of my all time favorite characters. She could’ve escaped & given up so many times but instead, she decided to train and get stronger even with her chronic illness and I loved her so much.

The tension between Xaden and Violet was palpable and the slow burn was done so well!! And they actually are enemies. Not the silly “I hate you for no reason” type of thing in other books that are marketed as “enemies to lovers”.

And the DRAGONS?? I’ve never cared for them before but this was so much more different than I expected. The fact that they can communicate with their riders is amazing and I loved seeing Violet bond with her dragon. It’s definitely a huge part of why I loved this so much.

A lot was happening near the end, I cried, I was angry, I was in shock. There’s one character that really got on my nerves and I’m kind of mad that they didn’t die by the end but hopefully they do by book 2 🤞🏽

I’ll be honest and say that the Sands of Arawiya duology will always be my #1 favorite fantasy series but this was a close second.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt this way about a book before. I’ve obviously had my favorites over the past couple of years but to go to bed and wake up thinking about a book and constantly remembering scenes from it?? That’s new to me and I think I’ll always have a special place in my heart for it

The premise was really good.

The trials were captivating and thankfully took up the required space in the book to make it feel worth it. The stakes were kept high thanks to them!

I LOVE how important the dragons were to the plot. They weren’t stuffed into the little box of only a mount and nothing more. The idea of dragons having their own governing council is just really awesome!

The magic is complex and interesting. I found how the history of the kingdom to be put forth to readers in such a unique way of a bookish coping mechanism of our FMC. I laughed about her reciting kingdom history to calm her nerves.
