This was my third time reading Fourth Wing but it still grabs me by the flight leathers and pulls me into battle. Intense, strong plot, and at times heartbreaking. Not for everyone. The pacing of this first book is superior to the second.

It’s pretty polarizing online among book influencers but I don’t think Fourth Wing is bad for a first installment. This was actually my second time going through it (in anticipation for book three) and I will say that after a re-read the character flaws are VERY loud. Overall, the biggest issue is the (almost) love triangle.
Dain is almost from the beginning, annoyingly condescending of Violet to the point that when he eventually betrays her, it doesn’t feel like the gut-punch it’s supposed to. You’re just left with this feeling of ‘well of course he would, he’s an asshole.’ And I think a large part of that is lack of development of their relationship prior to the story. We are told that they are childhood friends but we don’t really SEE their connection. He just babies her and makes references to their past that we never get to actually experience. A flashback or something would have been nice.

As for Violet and Xaden, for a first book their chemistry works but outside of physical attraction we aren’t working with much else. I would have loved them to have more opportunities, outside of the scene on the parapet toward the end, to really emotionally connect. But I’ve definitely been disappointed by worse, less developed insta-love before.

I had a good time regardless and at the end of the day that’s the important part.

This book gave me whiplash in the best possible way! There were so many twists and turns from the very beginning, and I spent the entire book trying to figure out who was trustworthy and what was going to happen next. The dragons are fantastic, and the book turned in so many directions I was not expecting. There’s a reason this series has a chokehold on so many people, and I already know I am going to tear through Iron Flame!

Absolutely loved this book. Exactly what I had been needing. It's good to start out but gets kicked up a notch when we actually get to the dragons.

Fourth Wing might be a booktok, bookstagram sensation, which isn’t always a good reference anyway, but it holds its own beyond that and absolutely grips you as a reader.

Firstly, having a disabled protagonist is so freeing. As someone who lives in chronic pain (and fatigue) having a character that suffers similarly, if not worse, is so exhilarating.
I absolutely love the way the people who truly love Violet enable her. They let her fight, they train her hard. Tairn picks her. Even Jack’s hatred of her is enabling as it continues long after she proves herself. Xaden’s saddle really clinched that element of the story, highlighting the impact of mobility aids. Tairn’s comment ‘you’ve worked as hard as, if not harder, than anyone here’ was incredibly moving because that is what life with a disability is. Equal or excessive work for lesser results.

Are there issues? Yes. Overuse of ‘toxic’, teenage relationship confusion, the fate of the world in the hands of young adults. But they are far exceeded by the superior narrative, the creative imagination and the driving storyline.

Yarros is a skilled and articulate storyteller. She brings so much to life on the page. She creates characters you love and characters you hate with equal skill. Her political creation is deeply disturbing and a harsh warning. But her characters are the absolute best part of all her writing. I am going to have to end this review because Iron Flame is waiting and then Onyx Storm. But I cannot recommend this book to fantasy lovers enough. It really is great.

Review after the fact because read this before I had a storygraph account: What a great first book of the series!! While there were a few grammatical errors, and I didn't always love the writing structure, I feel this will be such a good story! I am excited for book 2!

Took a while before I could get into the story, but when it finally picked up, I couldn't put the book down. You do have to have some suspension of disbelief to get through some of the plot at times, but it's all good.

Wildly polarized reviews for this one, but I enjoyed it and will definitely read book two.
