The Interior Castle or the Mansions by Benedictines of Stanbrook, Teresa of Ávila, Teresa of Ávila

“And yet it seems to me that we will never know ourselves unless we seek to know God. Glimpsing His greatness, we recognize our own powerlessness; gazing upon His purity, we notice where we are impure; pondering His humility, we see how far from humble we are."
“Our souls may lose their peace and even disturb other people's, if we are always criticizing trivial actions - which often are not real defects at all, but we construe them wrongly through our ignorance of their motives.”
“I would write a thousand foolish things that one might be to the point, if only it might make us praise God more.”
“Souls who do not practice prayer are like people whose limbs are paralyzed.”
“This Beloved of ours is merciful and good. Besides, he so deeply longs for our love that he keeps calling us to come closer. This voice of his is so sweet that the poor soul falls apart in the face of her own inability to instantly do whatever he asks of her. And so you can see, hearing him hurts much more than not being able to hear him… For now, his voice reaches us through words spoken by good people, through listening to spiritual talks, and reading sacred literature. God calls to us in countless little ways all the time. Through illnesses and suffering and through sorrow he calls to us. Through a truth glimpsed fleetingly in a state of prayer he calls to us. No matter how halfhearted such insights may be, God rejoices whenever we learn what he is trying to teach us.”
There is so much that I got out of this gem. Teresa of Ávila and her works should not be glanced over. Her thoughts on prayer, the soul, the sovereign nature of God, and a virtuous living is to be valued greatly.

A difficult read...especially in light of Teresa's commitment to self-flagellation and degradation. Essential for understanding one of the most beloved mystics in the Catholic religion.

Free ebook, translation of E. Alison Peers.
Note quite a four yet, but might become so as I explore the castle.
Also, she crazy. But then stopped being so after finding the 7th mansion.
