I really enjoy the John Corey series. I'm surprised I hadn't read this one earlier. I found the violence at the end a bit excessive/disturbing.

Bought this off of Bookbub for a couple of dollars because friends had read it years ago and said it was good. It wasn't. Predictable, macho nonsense, and a shallow unlike-able main character. Supporting characters weren't built beyond what was needed by the main character. Oh, well. Check it off the list.

Really wanted to like this book more because of DeMilles other stuff, but there was SO MUCH screwing around in the first half of the book that had nothing to do with the ending

Our favorite holiday wine is bottled in Washingtonville, NY but I did not know it was near the New York Animal Import Center (NYAIC) in Newburgh, NY where this novel reveals that quarantined animals and some destined for that Plum Island installation neare the North Fork of Long Island is located. Nelson Demille portrays an entertaining investigation and resolution of many murders along with intrigue about Captain Kidd and long missing Pirate treasure. I suspected much of the plot early in the novel but I enjoyed the amusing banter of the convalescing NYPD detective and his misadventures.

This was one of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time, making me regret a decision many years ago not to read any more Nelson DeMille books. I don't remember now which book(s) I read of his that led to that decision (the General's Daughter, I think), but I am definitely going to be reading the rest of the John Corey series. John Corey is an interesting (although a bit bizarre) character, and the writing is both funny and suspenseful.
