This is a fun one, I really like Fonda Lee's way of writing fights, so a book in which a not insignificant amount of time is dedicated to training for and participating at a martial arts tournament is an excellent way of utilizing her skills. The fights are by far the most enjoyable bits (again, luckily, there are plenty), while the rest is a very by-the-numbers YA fare, there's young love (but not too much, this is a duology), there's family drama, there's anger-driven teens who fall to their overconfidence, there's political drama, the works. I do love the faux-asian court intrigue bits, and the cast is fine enough. It doesn't get as gritty or sophisticated as her Green Bone saga stuff, but it strikes a good middle point.

I came into this expecting Jade City and unfortunately this was nothing like that. I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style and this felt very cartoonish almost? Also I was not vibing with the main character. I think if I went into this with lower expectations I probably would’ve enjoyed it
