Okay..  I'll be honest.  I guessed whodunnit pretty early on and as I made my way through the story, it was predominantly to ensure that I guessed correctly.

Rating was lowered because I didn't find it all that captivating and there was an odd focus on sweat that really took me out of it.

ðŸ“–: Years ago, Lucy left her small Texas town after being found wandering down the street covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, not able to remember a single detail from the night before when Savvy was killed. Now, a true-crime podcaster wants to make Savvy’s story the focus of his show. In an attempt to remember what happened and either face the consequences or clear her name, Lucy heads back home and jumps head-first into the investigation.

This psychological thriller was kind of predictable (I knew who the culprit was by the 2nd interaction with that person), but still compelling. Even though I thought I knew where it was going, I didn’t have motivation or the rest of the pieces figured out, so I still enjoyed it. It was an interesting format– even though true crime podcast books are A THING right now, this one does it well! This was definitely a book to listen to on audio– the podcast excerpts that were included in the book were an especially effective use of the audio format, but I don’t know how well they’d work in a written format.

*I think this was a case of a book being overhyped, and that I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn’t gotten so much attention and so many rave reviews before I got to it.

Read this if… thrillers like In My Dreams I Hold A Knife, None of This Is True, or the show Only Murders in the Building are right up your alley!

Dark thriller with a dash of comedy. The complexities of intimate relationships with friends, family and lovers were well written and at times icky and messy- just like real life. Yeah I knew it was a thriller but was not expecting the
domestic violence and violence overall
- not complaining; I thought the author did a good job and I have no doubt many people can (unfortunately) relate to the
gaslighting of Matt's abuse and the Emmett craziness - him not getting that "no" 100% means respect my "no" and back off
I would have rated it higher but I had big issues with the character of
Savvy and the flippant/deranged way she talks about outright killing men that go too far. A hard slap fine but gosh she stabbed that dude to the point of overkill!! And then thought it was ok to kill Matt - don't get me wrong he was a grad A piece of shit but still to KILL him?
I really liked the honesty of (and many men will no doubt disagree - but in my experience this is right on accurate)
men believing other men
. However, I was baffled by Lucy's parents.
Their openly cheating relationship was weird but worst was the rationale to withhold information and also trust in Matt over Lucy - who abused her for years was disgusting. I'm glad granny Bev addressed that!!!!
Speaking of which, Granny Bev was an awesome character!! I was curious how the author was going to explain
Savvy's skin found under Lucy's nails and Lucy bruising her but the attack scene and struggle was well written and totally bought it.
The ending was ok but lacked the oomph I was hoping for. Not a perfect book, but still an enjoyable page turner :)
