I initially was sceptical about the whole really old badass mc and there are indeed a few problems with it but in general, the book pulled it off pretty well. I was waiting for the cringe but it never came.
The main problems that I had with the book were: first, the age-old problem of very old characters acting like the age they look and not the age they are. Initially, the jaded and removed nature of a person that lived for centuries was portrayed pretty well but as soon as the time came for some emotional drama the whole thing flew out the window, welcome 21-year-old.
There is a willy-nilly explanation for it in the form of "she was never taught" but that just isn't enough. You aren't taught life-experience and common sense. It's something you gain naturally over time. Some faster, some slower, but after multiple centuries even someone really slow should've picked up a bit more emotional maturity.
The second big thing that is probably a red flag for many is insta-love. And I am talking all the way I-would-die-for-you insta insta love. It never bothered me too much if the rest is good enough but I know many people can't get over it for the life of them. If you are one of those, this one is a big no no for you. The sad part about it is that it really wasn't necessary at all for any of the plot to work. There could just as well have been a shortish period to develop it. I guess the author truly believes that love-at-first-sight happens regularly.
Third, there is some betraying going on and it seems it's all forgotten and forgiven by the end. Maybe I am just an incredibly wrathful person but I believe it's so bad it should end in a permanent break. I frequently experience this in books. That (usually the MC) forgives things, either way too easily, or at all, that I am just not ok with. Reading about this almost nonchalant forgiveness just rankles me because it's something that few can ever recover from in real life. Forgiveness is a praised virtue for a reason. I guess not many people actually experienced true and deep betrayal like that.
Just as a related side note something most authors don't seem to get either is that the deeper a friendship is the more fragile it becomes. Being betrayed or to be let down by someone close to you results in far more painful emotional scars that are far harder to heal. It's always portrayed the other way around. I really don't get where this idea comes from.
After a really long dry spell of books that actually managed to engage me I am not certain if this book truly deserves 4 stars. But in comparison to the stuff I rated 3 stars in the last few days, this was just better in terms of personal enjoyment. So here we are, a very low 4-star rating I guess.

I am not talking about the temporary insanity while trapped in raging grief. I am talking about striker keeping all his abilities from max.Just as a related side note something most authors don't seem to get either is that the deeper a friendship is the more fragile it becomes. Amazing Book!
Great book. Supernatural books are right up my ally and this one fits perfectly. Can not wait to read the rest of the series!

I finished this book in 2 sessions. The first night I had to force myself to put it down. It was way past bed time and I needed to be up early. Night 2 before bed reading I said screw it I will just be tired in the AM.
This book was too good to put down. I loved everything about it Especially Max’s attitude. Starting book two tomorrow.
Highly recommend!!!!
Also thank you Facebook for the suggestion for once you did good with the ads!!!!
