So, good rule of thumb: if you liked the first Vivian book, you'll like this one too. Same plot, just advanced a bit. Vivian Apple and her friends are trying to defeat the megachurch that has captured the nation.
If criticizing organized religion and corporatocracy is your jam, and you can suspend your disbelief a leeeetle bit, these books are probably for you. There certainly is a good deal of, let's say, implausibility, but that's what makes these books fun. They're sort of an atheist teenage f-the-police fantasy.
(Which IS my jam.)

Overall enjoyable. The first half is very good. The second half becomes a little hard to swallow plot-wise. The writing is outstanding throughout. Vivian and Harp are wonderful characters. The theme of the nation falling under the spell of a corporate-sponsored religion rings true in a scary way.
This was a really fun read while snowpocalypse 2016 was happening- a little end of the world to go with power outages and such. I loved that Vivian was unapologetic in her non-belief and I really love her friendship with Harp, and I think the main theme in these two books is there's a difference between being a good girl and being a good person, and I think this really nails that-that some people can be spiteful and horrible and some people are flawed but maybe can change and some people are just really trying to figure it out and do their best in bad circumstances.
It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't terrible either...maybe a little too predictable for my taste. Worth reading if you read the first book, but I don't think it would "stand alone" without the backstory of the first book (which the name escapes me).
THAT ENDING!! I WANT TO KNOW MORE!! WHY YOU LEAVE ME HANGING LIKE THAT??
Okay, so it wasn't a real cliffhanger, but I really do want to know more about what happens to America and to the world after the business with the Church of America.
I really love Harp and Vivian and Winnie and Peter. It's scary to think how gullible people are.
I enjoyed it a lot and I'm sad that it's a duology.

This sequel to [b:Vivian Apple at the End of the World|20256737|Vivian Apple at the End of the World (Vivian Apple, #1)|Katie Coyle|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1421139957s/20256737.jpg|24935012] finds Vivian and Harp continuing their fight against The Church of America, an evil religious conglomeration (think part Westboro, part Walmart). Giving away too much plot would spoil the ride, so I’ll just say that End of the World contains all of the following: a secret militia, even more badass female characters, disguises, fake rapture part two, hilarious blog entries (thanks, Harp!), fake betrayal, real betrayal, reunions, realizations, kidnappings, deaths, and some serious sledgehammer smashing.
I just need to take a moment to say how much I love a duology. Thank you, [a:Katie Coyle|7054607|Katie Coyle|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1408386111p2/7054607.jpg], for not stretching out this book into two parts! This sequel was action packed and raced toward the conclusion of the series at breakneck speed, and it was so much fun to read. Vivian Apple is a total BAMF, yet she’s also realistic and fallible. Some of her decisions had me shaking my head, but honestly, I’m not even sure why I do half the things I do either. Her questionable judgement always felt in character. Thanks for keeping it real, Viv. And Harp is as funny and snarky as ever, playing possibly an even larger role in this book than in the first.
As amazing as a duology is, TWO duologies are even better. Although this one ends on a satisfying note, there’s definitely more story to tell. I hope that this isn’t the last we see from these characters - I need a Harpreet Janda spin-off series!
I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children’s Book Group and to NetGalley for the advance copy!
