Sweet and interesting, but I like the first book better. However, Red Rose is one of my favorite characters!

I first read What Katy Did in high school and I loved the description of life on a farm like homestead in West (mid west?) America in the latter half of 1800s, it was fascinating for me to read as a YA of a girl my age across time and distance; so new to me! Loved reading of her father, Dr Carr and her abundant younger siblings, of mischief and remorse, adapting to hard obstacles and learning humility and acceptance. One of my favourite books to read when I need a dose of wholesome.
Katy and her next younger sibling Clover are sent to a school for young girls way East, near Connecticut, where they meet some interesting personalities, face challenges in character building and learn to socialise in a new environment. The principles they've learnt at home, from Cousin Helen and their own innate good nature sees them through difficult times.
A good read for a teenager or anyone who likes to read about people in a different era.

This was a wonderful book I read as a child. I excitedly downloaded it to my Kindle as a free ebook, but some of the spelling and layout made me a little uneasy.
Odd to find that, now I have grown, many of the characters are different! because of course they were older than me when I first read them, but of course now I am older than them...

Apparently this is semi-autobiographical which means the way Katy is presented as more good and brilliant than anyone else is kind of narcissistic. The go off to school and apart from a prigging "anti-flirting" club they start, nothing much happens. Mediocre boys express approval of them for being "ladylike" and not interested in them.
They write some poetry and attempt to speak french but there is no mention of things like exams and you have to wonder if they actually learned anything or if this is more like finishing school just making them fit for marriage. There's a lot of housework and being industrious and feeling guilty and taking the blame and hiding your true feelings (Rose is to some extent the opposite of that but not really). And loving children too of course.
I loved this series as a kid but I think even then I must have skipped the confusing bits. As an adult it's just a curiosity from a very limited past.

This was actually lovely. I didn't expect it to be as nice as it was. Honestly, not a lot goes on, but it's very cute. I'd love to read the rest of them.
